EAST PROVIDENCE — The annual trip by St. Margaret School eighth graders to the nation’s capital received a big boost Friday, March 1, when State Representative Katherine Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence) provided the youngsters with a $5,000 legislative grant check.

St. Margaret Principal John Rezendes said 29 students in the 2013 graduating class will take the trip in late May. They have already received an invitation to tour the White House, the Capitol building and many of the monuments on the National Mall. Mr. Ron Procopio is the eighth-grade home room teacher.

“We’re very grateful to Rep. Kazarian,” Mr. Rezendes said. “It’s the first time I’ve personally had the opportunity work with her, and it’s been a real pleasure to work with someone so new and enthusiastic.”

Rep. Kazarian, serving her first term in the State Legislature, said she was pleased to assist the youngsters with their class trip, which will mark the 17th year in a row St. Margaret eighth graders have made the sojourn to Washington D.C.

“An organization can apply for the grant and I submit the request, which I was happy to do,” Rep. Kazarian said. “It’s really important for these kids to get the chance to go Washington D.C. St. Margaret is such a great school. It’s a real asset to our community. And a lot of the kids who go here are from East Providence, so that makes it even more worthwhile.”

Mr. Rezendes said the children’s fundraising effort is not complete. They will continue to sell calendars and other items in an attempt to raise even more money for the trip.
