Barrington Town Hall, Barrington, Rhode Island

The Barrington Town Council passed  a plastic bag ban by a 4-1 vote Monday night.

The ban, which prohibits the use of plastic bags at checkout but allows certain bags such as plastic barrier bags, will take effect as of Jan. 1.

The ordinance will also include a sunset provision, however, which was proposed by Town Councilor Cynthia Coyne. The ordinance will automatically expire on Jan. 31, 2015, unless action is taken at that time to leave the ordinance in effect.

To all the Barrington shoppers out there, will this plastic bag ban really make a difference? Is anyone going to start shopping in other towns because of the ban? We’d love to know what people think. Feel free to leave your thoughts in our comment section or poll below.
