Rain forces East Providence High graduation ceremony indoors

EAST PROVIDENCE — The threat of rain has forced the East Providence High School Class of 2014 commencement ceremony scheduled for Friday night, June 13, indoors.

Instead of its traditional home of Pierce Stadium, the current crop of Townies will instead receive their diplomas at the Providence Country Day Field House adjacent to the high school grounds.

The start of the graduation ceremony remains the same, 6:30 p.m.

Administrators made the decision just before noon Friday and with no end to the rain in sight. The forecast for later in the evening set the chance of precipitation at upwards of 90 percent.

  1. How many family members of tonight’s graduate class, feel robbed not by the rain, but instead by the graduation arrangements set by East Providence High School?

I am a proud stepfather who has been part of my sons life since the age of four. He graduated tonight and sadly I was not able to be a part of this once in a lifetime special day. I don’t blame the rain, I blame the high school for not having a better back up plan or a better plan all together. Due to the rain forcing the ceremony indoors, only two guests may be at the ceremony per graduate. Obviously no one can control the weather but possibly should they have a rain date, as an alternative to moving indoors and shutting out important family members? Maybe consider booking a larger venue and selling graduation tickets?

In my opinion what has happen tonight, cannot be erased for myself and many others, as I am certain. We have lost an irrecoverable piece of history in our children’s lives. We will never get to experience the emotions of our young adult graduates crossing the stage. To add salt to the wound I hear certain graduates had more then the allowed two guests.
