It’s been an especially good growing season, maybe his best yet, Mr. Giarrusso said.
He trucked the smallest of his monster pumpkins, a 996.8 pounder, up to Maine recently and took first place in the Maine Weigh-Off.
Another, a 1,147-pounder is bound for competition at a Connecticut fair.
But this biggest, 1,348 pounds and still growing as of last Thursday, he’s saving for the Southern New England championship to be held Oct. 6 in Warren.
It’s a big one but he’s heard talk that Ron Wallace, a big player in these events, has one that is pushing a ton.
“Good seeds and I worked hard this year, probably the hardest ever,” Mr. Giarrusso said when asked why his did well while other growers came up empty this year. “And lots and lots of water. I have three wells which helps in a dry summer like we had.”
