Portsmouth: Trail of battered cars leads to drunk driving arrests

PORTSMOUTH — Police say a Portsmouth driver smashed into three cars and then, having lost a front tire and rim, drove home slowly trailing a shower of sparks.

The Saturday night, Nov. 24, incident led to drunk driving charges — first against the man accused of causing the accident, then against a neighbor who drove down to the police station to help out.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police were called to Park Avenue for a report of a hit and run accident. There they found three damaged cars along with a tire and rim from another vehicle that had left the scene.

The trail let to the 14 Point Road residence of Joseph P. Cabral where a damaged vehicle lacking a front tire was found. Mr. Cabral was charged at 10:49 p.m. with drunk driving, refusing a chemical breath test, and duty involving collision with unattended vehicles.

He was taken to the police station where, a short time later, Emanuel A. Pita, 66, of 10 Point Road “arrived with arraignment money for an acquaintance in custody for suspected driving under the influence.”

Police said they observed that Mr. Pita’s speech was slurred and his eyes glossy. At 11:13 p.m., he, too, was charged with drunk driving (greater than .15 percent blood alcohol content).
