The Portsmouth School Department has canceled classes for Wednesday due to the snowstorm.
The department shared the news in an automated phone message that went out at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. The snow and ice, along with the expected low wind chill factor during the morning commute, were cited as the reasons.
According to Portsmouth Emergency Management Agency (EMA), weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the afternoon and evening hours, making travel difficult on all roads. The National Weather Service has upped its snowfall prediction to 8 to 12 inches.
EMA will issue a travel advisory tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6 a.m.
“Portsmouth EMA will be monitoring hashtag #Janus02871 until 11:00 PM tonight, and again tomorrow beginning at 5:30 AM. Please use this hash to report anecdotal storm observations and road condition reports. Do not use any social media to report an emergency – always call 911,” reports EMA.
Portsmouth police has issued a parking ban that is effective now through 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Prudence Island Ferry has canceled its 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday runs. The first boat leaving Bristol will be at 10 a.m. The 10:30 a.m. boat may be late leaving depending on how much snow needs to be cleared at Homestead, the ferry service announced.
