Portsmouth’s Matt Greenman, shown in a game earlier this year, scored four touchdowns in the Patriots’ 44-14 win over Barrington Friday night.

Portsmouth scored on its first two possessions and marched out to a 36-0 halftime lead before running away with a 44-14 win over Barrington on Friday night at Victory Field in Barrington.

Portsmouth’s Matt Greenman broke off a 32-yard run to open the scoring for the Patriots less than two minutes into the game. Barrington showed flashes on its first offensive drive, as quarterback Jacob Simons completed passes to Jack Kelly and John Meehan, but missed on a fourth-and-two pass at the Patriots’ 35 yard line.

The Patriots responded with another quick touchdown drive. Portsmouth quarterback Bobby Chavous scrambled out of the pocket on a broken play and dropped a short pass to Greenman. The hard-running tailback sprinted through a host of Eagle defenders for a 38-yard touchdown. Chavous’ 2 two-point conversions gave Portsmouth a 16-0 edge with 3:05 left in the first quarter.

Portsmouth scored three more times in the second quarter — Greenman on a short run and a long pass reception, and Matt Sewall on a 4-yard pass from Chavous. The Eagles’ defense struggled to slow down the Portsmouth attack and found no success running the ball itself. With about 5 minutes left in the half, Simons went down with an injury, further hurting Barrington’s offense.

The Eagles’ Sam Vetromile and James Murphy scored second half touchdowns, while the Patriots’ Daniel Mohr added to Portsmouth’s total.

The loss followed a pair of losses for Barrington — the Eagles dropped games to LaSalle and Bishop Hendricken, following a close victory over South Kingstown in mid-October. Barrington next plays Mt. Hope in the annual Thanksgiving Day game; the Huskies were 5-2 this season prior to their first-round playoff game scheduled for tonight, Nov. 10.
