Portsmouth Police: Man with pistol confronts fireworks shooters

Tuesday, July 2
After police responded to a 1:34 a.m. disturbance on Narragansett Avenue, Prudence Island, Renee D. English, 49, of Providence, was charged with simple assault and resisting arrest.
Wednesday, July 3
Jason T. Jones Jr., 19, of Tiverton, was arrested on a warrant at 8:31 p.m.
Thursday, July 4
After police went to his house at 9:17 p.m. for a disturbance report, Henry B. Bernstrom, 84, of 52 Bay View Ave., Portsmouth, was charged with felony assault. Neighbors said that Mr. Bernstrom had come out with a pistol in his hand and threatened to kill them if any fireworks entered his yard. Inside, he led officers to a .38 special pistol loaded with five bullets. He said people had been shooting fireworks over his house and that he went out to protect his property with a pistol because he was afraid for his safety. He said he never pointed the gun at anyone although a neighbor disputed that.
At 12:21 a.m., Joseph J. Venditto, 46, of Cranston, was arrested on two warrants, one a felony warrant.
Sunday, July 7
After she was found asleep behind the wheel in a car parked partially on the line dividing the breakdown and travel lanes at 12:54 a.m., Katie Beth Azevdeo, 34, of Westport, was charged with drunk driving and refusing a chemical breath test.
