The opportunity is part of a fund raiser devised by Friends of the PHS Arts and Athletic Complex and the PortsmouthHigh School Athletic Boosters.
Fans (individuals or groups) are invited to “Back the Track” and “Turf the Field,” one meter, one years at a time.
PHS Principal Robert Littlefield announced the initiative recently, calling it a fun way to help a worthy cause.
The track and field project, he said, “Will give our students and residents safer surfaces to play and exercise on, as well was maximum playing and practicing time for many different sports, marching band and other activities, including physical education classes.”
Participants can purchase one meter of track for $50; two meters for $100, one meter of finish line for $200, and a six meter wide piece of track for $250. All $250 sponsors will be recognized on the website as “Endurance Donors.”
Those wishing a piece of the new field may buy a block of turf (five square yards) for $100; a block of turf in the end zone for $200 (be sure to pick your side); and a block at mid-field for $300. All who sponsors at $200 or more will be recognized as “Varsity Donors.”
The sponsorship stakes will be mapped out on signs that will be displayed at the athletic complex upon completion of the project.
The groups need to raise an estimated $1.6 million to replace the worn out track and field.
If they can do so in time, they intend to break ground in June of 2013 so that work can be complete in time for the start of school next September.
To participate in Back the Track or Turf the Field, send checks payable to PHS Athletic Boosters (include Arts & Athletic Complex in memo line), P.O.Box 438, Portsmouth, RI 02871, or sponsor online at www.fphsaac.org.
