The band was one of only 10 high school units in the country selected to march in President Barack Obama’s second inaugural parade on Monday, Jan. 21.
A caravan of four buses — with a police escort — left the high school Sunday around 11:25 a.m. as parents, grandparents, friends and supports cheered them on.
About 190 band members and chaperones are headed to D.C. A crew of several band students and chaperones took about 20 minutes loading up the four buses with uniforms, instruments, luggage, food and other gear before the buses made their way down Patriots Way as supporters waved goodbye.
This will be the PHS band’s second appearance in a presidential inaugural parade. The band also marched in President Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural parade in January 1981. Several PHS band students have parents who marched in the 1981 parade.
The band will return home to Portsmouth sometime Tuesday night.
