Porn recovered from Bristol harbormaster’s computer

By   /   October 10, 2013  /   17 Comments

A forensic audit of the hard drive in the Bristol Harbormaster’s office revealed that the computer was indeed “wiped,” and done by former assistant harbormaster Matt Calouro.

In a summary report submitted to Bristol Town Council members Wednesday night, Data-Medics’ Jared Palmer wrote, “Information recovered from the drive, including actual files and, in some cases, only file name references, indicate that Matt Calouro used this computer for more than just the Online Moorings application, that he saved files to the hard drive, and that he subsequently took actions, specifically on May 23, 2013, to permanently delete files from the drive.”

The summary highlighted about 7GB of the 29GB Mr. Palmer recovered from the hard drive, most of which was written to the very end of the drive. This suggests “some type of wipe software was used…to permanently delete files and file references from the drive.”

Mr. Palmer was able to discern that the “wiping” took place between 7:24 a.m. and 9:39 a.m. on May 23.

Items that were deleted included payment vouchers, references to harbor management commission memos, references to harbormaster equipment, and video clips of inappropriate content. Town Administrator Tony Teixeira confirmed that the video clips were pornographic in nature.

“If he were an employee of the town now, he would be in my office and that’s it, done,” said Mr. Teixeira. “But since he’s no longer employed with us, I’m not sure if there’s much we can do.”

At the request of Mr. Teixeira, town council members approved conducting a forensic audit of the harbormaster’s computer during an Aug. 28 meeting.

Mr. Teixeira cited that the computer had no information on it when the town’s information technology specialist tried to set it up for the current harbormaster’s use. When Greg Marsili reported to work June 26 as the new harbormaster, the computer appeared to be “wiped of all documents,” Mr. Marsili told council members in a July 11 department report.

The reason for a lack of information on the computer, Mr. Calouro had previously explained, was due to Onlinemooring.com – the online database used by the department manage the harbor. All information relative to the database was provided to town officials, Mr. Calouro said.

“Matt kept saying that everything was in Online Mooring, but I had a gut feeling that more was missing,” Mr. Teixeira said. “When it came to the day-to-day documentation, things that we have hard copies of, they were missing.

“I became skeptical after the (public information requests) he was making, and then did due diligence to find out what was going on.”

Mr. Calouro was one of three top candidates for the Bristol Harbormaster’s position. However, when the town council hired Mr. Marsili, Mr. Calouro filed several Freedom of Information Act requests for public documents relative to the hiring process. A legal representative of Mr. Calouro sent the town council a letter of intent to file suit about a month ago as a result.

“There have been no other requests or follow through on that,” Mr. Teixeira said.

Mr. Calouro could not be reached for comment.

The town council is expected to discuss the audit summary during an Oct. 30 meeting.

    Mr. Colouro
Who was you favorite Little Rascal?

    Was it Alfalfa….. or Spanky?

  2. Local Bargain Jerk says:

I don’t know Mr. Calouro, but it seems like he handled this situation about a poorly as possible. I.e.:

    1) He left his position with no notice and thus eliminated the possibility of receiving a positive (or any) reference for the position at any time in the future.

    2) He deleted his employer’s files, but was not so talented about it because…………..

    3) ………he left behind evidence that he was engaging in activities not directly related to his position … personally embarrassing activities.

    4) He is indicating his “intent to file suit” against the town for failing to produce documents relating to his not being hired for the harbormaster position. If Mr. Calouro “wins” this lawsuit, the town’s remedy, of course, would be to comply and provide the documents. If that happens, where’s the victory for Mr. Calouro? Does he really want to see the official record indicating what caused people to conclude he wasn’t the most qualified candidate for the job? Doesn’t he understand that the files might possibly contain statements such as “We didn’t hire him because there were too many reports that he sat in his office watching dirty movies”?

Apparently this guy skipped school the day they taught the “Here’s how to act like a man and cut your losses” lesson.

You can guarantee there are porn files being deleted from many town computers today.

  4. bfftony bob says:

Mr. Calouro was the most qualified candidate according to the results from the selection committee.

We know the date the computer was wiped but do we know the date all that filth was put INTO the computer, could it have been placed there by the last HM Capt. Joseph Cabral , Mat’s father in law. What a Thanksgiving they are going to have. There will definately be fistacuffs over who gets the breast.

  6. Vastaisback says:

This is the tip of the iceberg, wait until they investigate the financials, that is when everyone will know WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THE HARBORMASTER’S OFFICE, BESIDE , PORN, MISMANAGEMENT,MONEY’S MISSING ON AND ON HANG ON JOE !!!!

  7. DignityMatters says:

It would do us all some good to remember that Mr. Calouro , while flawed, has a wife and three small children who live in this town. The public’s “Right to Know” every sordid detail here is frankly unnecessary. Mr. Calouro , as Mr Texeira points out, is no longer in a position with the town. It feels a little like a witch hunt. Mr. Calouro dared to question Mr. Texeira so LOOK OUT! There are plenty public officials in town who have dirty little secrets that are not so secret. Perhaps this town needs to consider the collateral damage. What will life be like for these kids in this town now. I hope Mr. Texeira feels proud of the pain he has caused them while doing his rather unnecessary duty. Or hasn’t Mr. Texeira ever had something in his life he’d rather not want the world to know? I think there is a way to do your duty without being cruel.

      Dear DignityMatters:

I generally agree with your points, BUT, there’s this:

“A legal representative of Mr. Calouro sent the town council a letter of intent to file suit about a month ago as a result.”

If Mr. Calouro truly wants to keep “something in his life he’d rather not want the world to know” a secret, he should abandon this foolishness about suing the town.

If he continues, he should expect the town, its counsel, and its elected officials to do everything in their power to mount a defense. If they choose to be bare-knuckled about it, well that’s their decision.

You can’t poke a bear with a stick and expect not to get bitten.

      • DignityMatters says:

        Dear Local Bargain Jerk;

I don’t entirely disagree with you. But, generally speaking, personnel matters are handled with a modicum of discretion. Not posted in our local gossip rag….er newspaper. I just think this was handled vindictively. I find it disturbing. It seems like someone at the town said. Oh yeah! Well if you are coming after us we’ll make sure you AND your family pay. I think that’s disgusting. Given the benefit of the doubt we’ve given our current harbormaster, I would think the town would say let’s use some discretion here.

      • bfftony bob says:

You mean you don’t like porn?

      • bfftony bob says:

        The Freedom of Information Act….
The town has to provide this information.

  8. bfftony bob says:

This is unbelievable. Can the Tony Texeira the town administrator act any more vindictively? Has he no shame? Isn’t it enough that the NSA has access to all our info? Now the town administrator has to act like sherlock holmes? How about fixing the town web site without costing the taxpayers another 20k? WTF? And the phoenix prints the story on the front page? I think this has been a witch hunt and there are a lot of folks such as Tony Tex who should be tossed from office.

  9. bfftony bob says:

“If he were an employee of the town now, he would be in my office and that’s it, done,” said Mr. Teixeira. “But since he’s no longer employed with us, I’m not sure if there’s much we can do.”

Tony Texeira should know that he can’t hire/fire positions appointed by the town council.

  10. bfftony bob says:

Mr. Calouro had the top evaluation according to the search committee. It is against the law to withhold public records.

  11. bfftony bob says:

Wow. The current harbormaster covers up a rape and that merits coverage on page 5 but having porn on the computer of an ex employee is front page news.

  12. mmartel says:

Maybe instead of Onlinemooring.com they could rename the program Onlinewhoring.com.
