sexting-590x460A 17-year-old Mt. Hope High School student from Warren faces a “sexting” charge after police say he sent an explicit photo of himself to a girl he knows at the Bristol high school.

The boy was charged last week after police say he texted the girl an explicit photo of his private parts. She told her parents about the photo, and they brought the matter to the police. Sexting is classified as a misdemeanor, but it wasn’t always. Prior to 2012 it was considered a felony in Rhode Island to send pornography though an electronic device.

The boy was told to have no contact with the girl. He is due back in Family Court on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
