Sakonnet Police: Mineral heist, seat belt stops

Tuesday, Sept. 18

James D. Rainville, 36, of Middletown, was arrested on a bench warrant  at 11:48 p.m.

At 12:26 p.m., police arrested John DS. Moniz III, 55, of Bristol, on a warrant for larceny under $500. He allegedly took minerals from a local shop where he had once worked and attempted to sell them at another local shop.

Sunday, Sept. 23

Joseph A. Habingreither, 18, of 6 Garden St., Portsmouth, was charged with drunk driving and refusing a chemical breath test. Police said they saw him come to a complete stop for nearly one minute at a green light on West Main Road.


Monday, Sept. 17

At 7:51 p.m., a  caller reported an apparent breaking and entering of a vacant home on West Main Road sometime in the recent past, and that a washer and dryer were missing from the dwelling.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

At 6:28 p.m., a person was reported to have refused a request to leave Sakonnet Vineyards on West Main Road.  When police arrived, they determined the man had left immediately after police were called.

Thursday, Sept. 20

A resident turned in a key to police at 1:44 p.m. to a Volkswagon Passat that he said he’d found on West Main Road.

At 4:38 p.m., a Brownell Road resident reported she had observed someone stealing money from her roadside stand. Police are investigating.

Friday, Sept. 21

At 8:52 a.m., a  38 year old driver on Swamp Road reported striking a deer on Swamp Road, incurring damage to the vehicle but no personal injuries.


Monday, Sept. 17

After stopping him at 1:04 p.m. on Fish Road for failure to wear a seat belt, police charged James Barnes, 40, of New Bedford, under a 6th District Court bench warrant for failure to pay fines, and with driving with an invalid license.

At 6:06 p.m., Justin M. Pontes, 23, of Westport, was stopped on Crandall Road for not wearing a seat belt, and was charged under a 2nd District Court bench warrant with failure to pay fines. He was also charged with failure to wear a seat belt and with operating a motor vehicle with a revoked registration.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

Jason R. Haley, 30, of Fall River, was charged at 10:38 a.m. under a 2nd District Court warrant with failure to pay fines, after he was stopped near Judson Street and Main Road when an officer observed that a passenger in his car was not wearing a seat belt.

Thursday, Sept. 20

At 1:48 p.m., Corey Moniz, 24, of Fall River, was stopped near Judson Street and Main Road for not wearing a seat belt and with making an unsignaled turn, and after failing a field sobriety test, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid inspection sticker on his vehicle, and with not wearing a seat belt.

Friday, Sept. 21

After making gun gestures with his hand and striking a woman friend, Ion N. Cambra, 21, of 91 State Street, Tiverton, was charged at 6:11 p.m. with domestic simple assault.

Sunday, Sept. 23

Robert C. Frank, 39, of Warwick, was charged at 1:22 a.m. with driving under the influence of alcohol and refusal to take a breathalyzer test, after he was observed committing lane violations on northbound Route 24.

At 1:50a.m., Susan VanAllen, 51, of 23 Main Road, Tiverton, was charged with assault after allegedly striking and kicking her victim in the stomach.
