LITTLE COMPTON — A 10-wheel propane tanker truck ended up on its side in a ditch along South Shore Road at 8:24 p.m. Saturday.

Before the truck could be extricated and the scene cleared at 10:50 p.m., police and fire officials went door-to-door encouraging residents in about 20 nearby homes to evacuate to the town public safety complex, “due to the potential danger of explosion” said Little Compton Police Sgt. Costantino Natale.

It is not known how many residents evacuated.

The driver of the truck told police he had been driving south on South Shore Road road when a northbound car crossed into his lane of travel, causing him to swerve and roll into the ditch. Police were unable to locate the other vehicle, Sgt. Natale said.

A tow company was able to right the truck, he said, without damage or leakage to the tank.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the accident in still under investigation.

Police from Little Compton, and fire department personnel from Little Compton and Tiverton responded. Personnel from the Portsmouth Fire Department provided coverage at the safety complex for Little Compton firefighters who were at the scene.
