PORTSMOUTH — A 78-year-old local woman died after a head-on crash on West Main Road this morning.
According to Police Det. Lt. Brian Peters, police responded to West Main Road near Locust Avenue for a motor vehicle accident around 10 a.m. today, May 13.
A 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, operated by the 78-year-old Portsmouth woman, was traveling south on West Main Road when it crossed over the double yellow lines near Locust Avenue and collided with a 2008 Isuzu Box truck, according to police.
Rescue workers arrived to find the elderly woman trapped in the front seat of her car, where she was receiving care from bystanders and a police officer. Rescue workers used hydraulic tools and took 12 minutes to remove the woman in a process that involved removing the dashboard, according to Deputy Fire Chief Michael P. O’Brien.
She was transported to Newport Hospital with multiple severe injuries and was later pronounced dead, police said.
The name of the victim is being withheld at this time pending notification to next of kin, and the accident remains under investigation
The operator of the Isuzu, Richard McKenna, 52, of Palmer, Mass., was transported to Newport Hospital with apparent minor injuries.
