At about 6 p.m., Portsmouth Engine 1, Engine 3, and Brush 1 were dispatched to an “outside fire” in the area of Cedar and Marine avenues, Deputy Fire Chief Michael P. O’Brien said.
Crews arrived to find a 16-foot skiff “completely involved in fire,” he said.
The boat, believed to have been abandoned, was washed up on the shore of an area known as Crab Pond.
“The fire gave off heavy black smoke that was visible from miles away. Portsmouth Fire dispatch received multiple 911 calls, some as far away as McCorrie Point,” the deputy chief said.
The last unit cleared the scene at 8:10 p.m.
The fire is suspicious and is being investigated by the R.I. Fire Marshal’s Office and Portsmouth Police Department, he said.
