Portsmouth police charge man with DUI following crash


Portsmouth police patchPORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth police log from over the past week.

Tuesday, Nov. 19

Peter W. Brown Jr., 28, of 141 Berry Lane, Bristol, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) shortly after midnight. Police said they pulled Mr. Brown’s car over on Bristol Ferry Road after it was observed following too closely behind other vehicles. The car also had no taillights, police said.

Thursday, Nov. 21

A Mercury Sable driven by Christopher Carruba, of 250 Bristol Ferry Road, was struck from behind by a Volkswagen Beetle operated by Charlyn Friedman, of Acton, Mass., on Bristol Ferry Road near Sunny Acres just before 5 p.m., police said. The Friedman car sustained extensive damage to its front end, and both of its front airbags deployed. There were no injuries.

Friday, Nov. 22

Vehicles driven by Ian Brudenell of Wareham, Mass., and Brian Davis of Middletown, collided on West Main Road bear Bradford Street at about 12:40 a.m. Mr. Brudenell said he was traveling north on West Main Road when the Davis vehicle, traveling south, crossed over the yellow lines and struck his driver’s side fender. The Davis vehicle then left the scene, he told police. Middletown police later stopped Mr. Davis’ vehicle on Burma Road, just south of the town line. Mr. Davis said he did not see the other vehicle stop and that he was trying to drive home to contact police. His car sustained heavy damage to its driver’s side. Mr. Brudenell’s vehicle sustained damage to its driver’s side fender, its side mirror was torn off and the driver’s side window was shattered.

A Chevrolet Blazer driven by Kimberly Reyell of Tiverton collided with a Hyundai Sonata driven by Jennifer Costa, of 175 Massachusetts Boulevard, at about 9:30 a.m. on East Main Road at President Avenue. Police said a vehicle stopped suddenly in front of Ms. Reyell, causing her to stop abruptly. Ms. Costa, traveling behind, did not have enough time to stop and struck the rear of the Reyell vehicle, police said. Ms. Reyell complained of pain to the back of her head.

A 42-year-old woman was hurt when the car she was driving overturned after striking a utility pole on East Main Road near Church Lane at about 4:30 p.m. Police said Kelly M. Stevens, of 52 Mason Ave., was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram when the accident took place. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment and was released the following morning, according to police. The car was towed from the scene. The accident tied up traffic for some time on that section of East Main Road.

Saturday, Nov. 23

James M. Lewis, 23, of 140 Long Highway, Apt. L, Little Compton, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said the car Mr. Lewis was operating struck a barrier and a highway sign on Route 24 southbound near West Main Road shortly after 2 a.m.
