Portsmouth man charged with DUI following crash


PORTSMOUTH — A local man faces a charge of driving while intoxicated following a two-car accident last night in which he and another driver were injured.

Portsmouth police patchJeffery Gomez, 57, of 68 Perrault St., Portsmouth, was also charged with felony driving to endanger resulting in physical injury and refusal to submit to a chemical test following the 10:30 p.m. crash Thursday on West Main Road near Raytheon, according to Detective Lt. A.J. Bucci.

Police and rescue workers responded to West Main Road near Flanagan Road for a report of a two-car accident with injuries.

A preliminary investigation reveals that a 2001 Chevrolet Pickup operated by Mr. Gomez was traveling northbound on West Main Road when it crossed over the double yellow lines into the southbound lane, Detective Lt. Bucci said.

The second vehicle, driven by a 43-year-old man from Fall River in the opposite direction, was struck head on, he said.

Mr. Gomez had to be extricated from his vehicle using the Jaws of Life, according to Deputy Fire Chief Michael O’Brien. Mr. Gomez sustained a head injury and was transported to Newport Hospital, the deputy said.

The other driver was transported to Newport Hospital with multiple injuries, none of which appeared to be life-threatening, according to Deputy O’Brien.

Both men were were later transported to Rhode Island Hospital for further care.

Mr. Gomez was issued a summons at Rhode Island Hospital to appear in Newport District Court to answer the charges on March 6, according to Detective Lt. Bucci.
