PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Police believe they know who is responsible for a week-long wave of car thefts throughout town.

Fall River Police are holding Steven Couto, 20, of Fall River on a fugitive from justice warrant for Portsmouth after the two departments gathered evidence linking him to the theft of the Portsmouth cars, Lt. Brian Peters said Tuesday. He faces four counts of larceny over $1,500 so far and the investigation continues in efforts to link him to the other two vehicles — a total of six were stolen.

An arrest warrant has also been issued for another 21-year-old man from Fall River in connection with the thefts.

In the week from Sept. 14 to 20, vehicles were stolen in Portsmouth from Quail Road, Ash Street, Galley Lane, Stagecoach Road, Harborview Road and McIntyre Drive.
