PORTSMOUTH — An unidentified person has jumped from the Mount Hope Bridge sometime in the early evening Saturday. Nothing more is known at this time about when the incident occurred or if the individual was male or female.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said about 9 p.m. Saturday night that Tiverton, Portsmouth, Bristol, the Narraganset Bay MarineTask Force, and the U.S. Coast Guard all had boats out searching for the victim, but so far unsuccessfully.

Portsmouth, he said, was in command of the search.

Chief Lloyd said the search had to be called off “because of darkness,” and said, “I’m not sure if they will head back out at day break.” He said that, “based on currents the victim will be way out” from the point he or she had likely entered the water.
