PORTSMOUTH — Police have released a photo of the man charged with in connection with the disappearance of a 13-year-old Portsmouth girl July 24.

Daniel Berger, 27, of Haskell, N.J., was charged with transporting a minor with the intent to commit criminal sexual activity. If he’s convicted, the charge is punishable by a sentence of 10 years to life in prison, police said.

Mr. Berger made an initial appearance July 25 in Federal District Court in Newark, N.J. He’s back in Rhode Island today to face charges and is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Providence at 2 p.m. this afternoon, July 30.

The girl and the suspect “most likely met via the internet” beforehand, said Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Furtado, adding that the girl appeared to go with the man willingly. Her mother told police she left the house to run an errand at about 9 a.m. and returned to find her daughter gone.

An Amber Alert was issued and the girl was found safe in Mr. Berger’s apartment in Haskell at about 1 a.m. on July 25 and reunited with her family in New Jersey, Chief Furtado said.
