On Tuesday morning, Bristol Town Administrator Diane Mederos was relieved that the force of Hurricane Sandy was less than what forecasters predicted, but was still frustrated that portions of the town were without power.

“I just spoke with National Grid and they said it could be a couple of days before we get power,” she said.

Fallen trees were the cause of outages. The first happened on Monday afternoon near Rockwell School when a large tree fell across Meadoew Lane, taking with it power lines and causing a transformer to catch on fire. A National Grid worker is posted in the area to keep people away from the low hanging power lines, but repair crews have yet to respond.

On Monday night, at what was the height of the storm, a large old tree at the corner of Hope Street and Constitution Avenue became uprooted and toppled onto power lines. Power remains knocked out in the downtown area, affecting businesses and homes in that area.

According to Ms. Mederos, the National Grid representative she spoke with said that areas were put on a list of priority, with 1 being highest priority.

“We’re in the bottom five,” she said.

The department of public works will continue to clear up brush and fallen debris from the storm, looking to resume trash pick-up on Thursday.

“We just want to get it back to normal by Thursday,” said Jim Galuska, DPW director.
