EAST PROVIDENCE — The parking ban initiated at the start of Winter Storm Nemo continues in East Providence through Sunday, Feb. 10, and into Monday, Feb. 11.

East Providence Police Department Major Christopher Parella said the ban remains in effect until further notice. Major Parella added he had a discussion on the matter with Public Works Director Steve Coutu mid-afternoon Sunday and there is still a need to keep cars off city streets for the immediate future.

“We’re thinking at least into to tomorrow (Monday) morning,” Major Parella explained. “Public Works is still doing the primary plowing, and those efforts are expected to continue through the night (Sunday).”

A tour of the city Sunday afternoon found most of the main thoroughfares clear of a majority of snow from Nemo, which dropped nearly two feet in the city. Both public and private plows were attempting to remove what was left of the snow from the edges of Pawtucket, Newport, Taunton, Warren, Willett and Waterman Avenues.

Most sidestreets had been cleared of at least the first layer of snow. Many business owners and residents were also beginning to abide by the city ordinance, which requires sidewalks to be cleaned 24 hours after a snow storm. Earlier Sunday City Manager Peter Graczykowski announced the ordinance would not take effect until Monday, Feb. 11, taking into consideration the amount of snow Nemo deposited in East Providence.
