EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Fire Department responded a fire at a residence on Oak Crest Drive in the Riverside section of the city early Wednesday morning, May 22. There were no fatalities.

The home of Pauline Vickers at 95 Oak Crest Drive apparently caught fire around 1 a.m. Acting EPFD Chief Oscar Elmasian said the first engines on scene arrived at approximately 1:10 a.m. and found a “heavy fire” in progress.

Ms. Vickers was rescued from the burning house by neighbors, a father and son, prior to the arrival of firefighters. The neighbors heard windows breaking from the heat, according to Chief Elmasian, and were able to remove the victim from the residence.

Ms. Vickers was taken by supporting Barrington FD rescue to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Chief Elmasian added.

East Providence Firefighters manned the blaze of the one-story, “ranch” style home. The fire apparently started in the living room at the front of the structure and quickly spread throughout the house. Ms. Vickers was evacuated from the home out a window in another area of the structure, believed to be a bedroom, according to the chief.

Chief Elmasian said the fire remains under investigation. The home suffered significant damage from the fire.
