One driver dead in Portsmouth crash

PORTSMOUTH — A driver was killed in a three-vehicle collision late Wednesday afternoon on Bristol Ferry Road.

Police and rescue workers responded to Bristol Ferry Road at Mare Terrace for a  motor vehicle accident involving three vehicles. A bystander was performing CPR on one victim before units arrived, and rescue workers took over.

One individual was trapped in a vehicle and was extricated using the Jaws of Life in less than five minutes, said Deputy Fire Chief Michael P. O’Brien.

Two of the drivers were transported to Newport Hospital by Portsmouth and Middletown rescue crews, where one of them was pronounced dead, said Police Det. Brian Peters. A third operator was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by Bristol Rescue.

Bristol Ferry Road was closed to traffic and vehicles had to be re-routed. The road re-opened at about 7:30 p.m.

The name of the drivers, including the deceased, are begin withheld pending notification of the families.

The accident remains under police investigation.

Portsmouth’s second rescue truck was not available because of another call of an accident on East Main Road at Glen Road just before 5 p.m., Deputy Chief O’Brien said. Two cars had collided, causing heavy front end damage.

Portsmouth Car 2, a Middletown Engine and Navy Rescue responded. While responding to the scene, Navy Rescue experienced mechanical problems causing Newport Fire Department Rescue to respond.  Newport transported two patients with minor injuries to Newport Hospital.

While crews were operating at the other two accidents, a third accident occurred at on East Main Road at Union Street just before 5:30 p.m. Three cars were involved and one patient was transported by Middletown Rescue to Newport.

Portsmouth Fire Department also handled two other medical emergencies during this time, the deputy chief said.
