O’Keefe steps aside from East Providence Budget Commission Chairmanship

EAST PROVIDENCE — Michael O’Keefe is nothing but a man of his word.

Nearly six months to the day since the state-appointed Budget Commission took over the financial reins of East Providence, Mr. O’Keefe delivered on words he stated back during the body’s first meeting in late December of 2011.

Mr. O’Keefe quietly handed over the chairmanship of the Budget Commission to cohort Diane Brennan during the group’s meeting Wednesday morning, June 27, in Room 306 of City Hall.

“I did. I did it,” Mr. O’Keefe said in response to his sticking to his original plans.

Asked for further comment, he wryly added, “If you read the minutes of that first meeting I took (the chairmanship) under three conditions: That I would do it for six months, that we would work on consensus and that only the chairman would speak for the Budget Commission. Any more questions, ask Diane Brennan. She’s the chairman now.”

Mrs. Brennan runs her first meeting July 12.
