Newport Creamery, on County Road, sustained smoke damage during a fire Monday night, though the exterior appeared fine Tuesday morning.

Newport Creamery might be closed Tuesday morning, but a company official said the restaurant did not suffer any significant damage from a basement fire Monday night.

Janice Mathews, vice president of Newport Creamery parent company Janco, said the fire was “very small” without any flames. She also said the first floor is fine.

“We go in, we clean up, get the smell out and move on,” she said.

“Everything looks fine. You could go in right now, sit down have a cup of coffee and a muffin.”

Ms. Mathews said the restaurant was awaiting visits from fire, building and health officials Tuesday morning. She said the restaurant closed at 9 p.m. Monday and the manager was locking up for the night, went downstairs and smelled something in the basement.

The manager called the fire department immediately.

Ms. Mathews said everybody involved in the incident has been great, including employees and town officials.

She also said all new supplies will be brought in, standard operating procedure following any restaurant fire.
