It wasn’t an awful, awful fire, but Newport Creamery in Barrington was still closed Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the County Road restaurant for a report of a basement fire at about 10:15 p.m. Monday. Lt. Edward Owens of the Barrington Fire Department said the fire itself was contained to the basement, though the entire structure suffered smoke damage.
The basement is reportedly a storage area where the restaurant keeps supplies. Employees were on scene Tuesday morning moving cups, cherries and other items out of the building, though none would comment on the fire.
Signs on both entrances said the restaurant was temporarily closed because of a “small fire.”
Lt. Owens said the business was closed when the fire started, but employees were on hand.
The fire was extinguished reatively quickly, Lt. Owens said, and firefighters were off scene by about 1 a.m.
The Barrington Fire Department and the state Fire Marshal are investigating a cause for the fire. Lt. Owens said the building inspector and Rhode Island Department of Health were also notified.
No one was reported injured.
