Warren Police Sgt. Michael Marcello answers a call on his radio.A Warren man wanted for murder in Swansea was arrested Tuesday, Dec. 24, by Rhode Island State Police and awaits extradition to Massachusetts.

Rhode Island state police said David P. Sousa, 54, of 98 South Cutler St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of being a fugitive from justice in Masschusetts. He was wanted by the Bristol County Attorney’s Office on one charge of murder and one of violating an abuse prevention order.

Mr. Sousa was arrested by detectives from the state police ACI Investigations Unit. He waived extradition before Third District Division Court Judge William Clifton, and was taken to the ACI.

Mr.  Sousa was indicted in October for the Nov. 24, 2012, strangling Lisa Mello, 51, in her Swansea home. Ms. Mello had been Mr. Sousa’s girlfriend at the time of her death.

Mr. Sousa has a long arrest record, having been charged by Warren police multiple times with offenses ranging from misdemeanor domestic assault to felony domestic assault, domestic vandalism, violating a no contact order, possession of marijuana, domestic breaking and entering, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, obstructing a police officer, vandalism, second degree child molestation and  malicious damage to property.
