One of the highlights of the evening was the unveiling of a state championship banner that was added to the collection high on the gymnasium wall. The girls’ tennis team gathered under the banner to reveal the words, “Girls Tennis Division III State Champions 2012” above.
While the bulk of the evening was dedicated to recognizing some of the outstanding student athletes who participate in the school’s sports program, the athletics department took a moment to honor a former varsity soccer player who died in November after battling cancer.
Timothy DaPonte’s jersey, bearing number 10, was officially retired at Mt. Hope. One jersey was framed and will be displayed inside the school. A second jersey was given to Timothy’s parents who tearfully accepted the honor for their son. Jonathon DaPonte, Timothy’s brother, is a member of the Huskies football team.
