PORTSMOUTH — Police here are seeking the owner of a gold coin that somehow found its way into the bin of the Turnpike Avenue BankNewport branch coin machine.

Portsmouth Police Lt. Brian Peters said that back in late September, a resident delivered the coin to the station. The man said he had found it in the bin into which items other than coins tumble during sorting. He showed it to bank employees who suggested he bring it to the police station.

Lt. Peters said the coin is fairly old and apparently worth from $300 to $500. Anyone who claims it will need to supply other details.

“We’d just like to get it back to its owner,” he added.

To learn more, call the detectives division at 683-0994.
