That is the midnight Monday estimate from NStar which reported that 17 percent of households served by the utility remained in the dark.

Of 5,497  households that get their power from NStar, 945  (17 percent) remained with power. That is down from 37 percent of households that were without power.

Although the utility has not returned calls from Shorelines or town officials lately, a utility spokesman said on a Boston station that several factors had combined to undermine earlier more optimistic forecasts.

A number of town roads remained difficult to get through due in part to repeated breakdowns suffered by town plows.

And Westport sustained considerably damage due to the wet, heavy nature of the snow through the storm. Whereas inland towns received deeper snow, it was also lighter and placed less strain on limbs and power lines.

The snow in Westport started heavy and wet and stayed that way, sticking to surfaces like glue.
