PORTSMOUTH — In honor of Memorial Day, two local groups will pay tribute to war veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
At 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23, The Portsmouth Garden Club will recognize our fallen heroes by placing a Memorial Day wreath in front of Portsmouth Town Hall at the World War I monument, 2200 East Main Road.
The Rev. Michael Pike of The Portsmouth United Methodist Church will do the invocation. The public is invited to attend.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, Alvaro E. Vieira VFW Post 5390, 822 Anthony Road, will present its annual Memorial Day ceremony.
Cub Scout Pack 50 will conduct the flag ceremony and lead guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. Post Patriot Pen winner Langdon H. Harris and Voice of Democracy winner Chris Norton will read their essays.
The guest speaker is Ret. Navy Captain and Post 5390 member Jeffrey Richard. Names of Post 5390 deceased veterans will be read, and guests will be asked to remember deceased family members and friends.
The late SSG Christopher Potts will be remembered with remarks by his memorial in front of the post. Cub Scouts will raise and then lower the flag to half staff. Post Commander Harry Church invites all guests for refreshments upon completion of the service.
