LITTLE  COMPTON  — Quick action by a Little Compton boater at about 8:30 p.m. Monday saved two men after their canoe swamped off the end of the Sakonnet Harbor breakwater.

The young men, in their early 20′s said Little Compton Fire Chief Rick Petrin, had been in the water calling for help for about half an hour before the rescuer arrived. A Bailey’s Ledge resident heard their calls, and a boater went to retrieve them before the Little Compton Fire Department was able to deploy its own rescue boat.

The young men, believed to be from Fall River, were transported by Little Compton Rescue to Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River for observation, Chief Petrin said. Little Compton police were unable to be reached for further details regarding the identity of the two men or the rescuer.
