Corey is battling cancer, and the walk and run will benefit the “Cory Burke Won’t Fight Alone” fund. It’s being organized by students Meg O’Brien and Shea Quinn.
Cory’s cancer diagnosis came by surprise after the 12-year-old complained of pain in his shoulder while playing baseball. Since the diagnosis, Cory has undergone treatment including chemotherapy, and his family is liable for costs associated with traveling to and from doctor visits and treatments. While Corey continues to battle the disease, those who know him, and many who don’t, have rallied to help.
The walk and run begins at 9 a.m. at Kickemuit Middle School, with check-in and onsite registration from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Runners can also register online at www.coolrunning.com; once there, click on the “races/results” tab and navigate to Rhode Island races. Cory’s race is the third on the list. Online registration is $20, or pay $25 on the day of the race. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of nine age groups, and T-shirts will be given to the first 150 entrants.
If you can’t run but want to help support the cause, make donations to the “Cory Won’t Fight Alone” Fund at People’s Credit Union on Gooding Avenue in Bristol.
