The Barrington School Committee will hold a meeting tonight, May 9, to discuss the creation of a full-day kindergarten program and the proposed school budget. The meeting will be held in the school committee room at 7:30 p.m.

Full-day kindergarten has been a hot topic in town. School officials initially put a $141,000 placeholder in the proposed budget to secure the program, but a further investigation revealed a larger price tag to build the program — about $633,000.

Officials are projecting full-day programs for this fall to include 82 students at Nayatt, 81 at Primrose Hill, and 51 at Sowams School.

The subcommittee saddled with reviewing full-day kindergarten will share its recommendation with the school committee at tonight’s meeting. There will be an opportunity for the public to offer comments and ask questions regarding “full-day K.”

Barrington Superintendent Mike Messore said the school committee could take an official stance on the program during tonight’s meeting, but might not.

“It’s open-ended,” he said.

The budget discussion will also likely include large first grade class sizes at Sowams School and the district’s plans to improve technology for students and teachers.
