Warren resident Steve Calenda runs in Falmouth, Mass. He last ran the Boston Marathon in 2011.

If it wasn’t for a tough winter training season and a hamstring injury, Warren runner Steve Calenda might have run the Boston Marathon Monday. Officials were reporting that two bombs were detonated at the race’s finish line around 3 p.m., killing and injury an untold number of victims.

“That would have been right around the time I’d be crossing the finish line,” Mr. Calenda said Monday afternoon. “I didn’t run this year. I’m watching the news (about the bombings) on the TV.”

Mr. Calenda last ran the Boston Marathon in 2011, and he is a regular sight on Warren’s highways and side roads. He considered running this year but didn’t after suffering a tough winter training season and hamstring injury.

“I would have been coming through” right around the time the blasts occurred, he said.

A reporter wasn’t the first to call Mr. Calenda after news of the bombing started getting out Monday afternoon. He said he’d already received a few texts and calls from runner friends who wondered if he was OK.

“I’m fine,” he said.

Looking at the TV footage, he said he was surprised to see the blasts occur directly at the finish line. All major areas of the race are swept by police, he said, and he said he doesn’t know how the explosions could have occurred so close to the race’s epicenter.

Another previous Boston Marathon runner, Bristol Warren Regional School Committee, also stayed out of this year’s race. Race records indicate that nobody from Warren ran this year.
