A spicebush swallowtail caterpillar hits the Kent Street courts in Barrington.

On Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 2, a tennis instructor who was giving a lesson at the Kent Street courts in Barrington made a strange discovery: a large orange caterpillar with very odd coloring crawling across the court.

He put the caterpillar on his racket and showed it to two women playing on the adjacent court. The ladies were shocked. One said it looked like a fish, the other called it a smile-face bug.

After a five-minute break to stare at the creature and take short videos on their phones, the tennis players decided to set the critter free in the woods near the courts.

The insect appears to be a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar. According to a web search, these caterpillars are found mostly in the northeast.
