Hampden Meadows School students raised $6,800 for Pennies for Patients

The students at Hampden Meadows School raised more money for the Pennies for Patients campaign than any other elementary school in the state this year.

The local boys and girls collected $6,845, which was nearly $800 more than the next school, Warwick’s Greenwood Elementary School. Hampden Meadows School students also ranked in the top 10 for most money raised per pupil — the local students were ninth best at $12.56 per student.

According to a press release, students used a variety of techniques to raise the money, which benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They held penny wars, dress up days, raffles, and principal and coordinator challenges. The top fund-raising classroom of each participating school received a reward lunch; the top five fund-raising schools received a school-wide ice cream party.

Students at Hampden Meadows School have raised more than $18,000 for Pennies for Patients since 2009, while students across the state tallied nearly $310,000 total this year.

This year, more than 28,000 schools nationally helped raise more than $26 million.

• Raymond C. LaPerche Elementary, Smithfield: $3,886.36

• Garvin Memorial Elementary, Cumberland: $3,603.08

• Henry Barnard School, Providence: $3,564
