Portsmouth transfer station closed on Friday

Portsmouth transfer stationPORTSMOUTH — The Town of Portsmouth has announced that the transfer station will be closed on Friday, Jan, 3, due to the winter storm.

The station, on Hedley Street, will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

In addition, Prudence Ferry has limited service Friday, with only the 3:30 p.m. boat still scheduled to run.

Public schools have been cancelled for today and tomorrow, Jan. 3. Bradley School and St. Philomena School also cancelled classes for today.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm warning for all of Rhode Island until 10 a.m. Friday morning. The current prediction for snow accumulation in Rhode Island is 6 to 10 inches.

Portsmouth has instituted a parking band that started at midnight on Jan. 1.

The Portsmouth Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is asking residents to complete all non-essential road travel before 8 p.m. today.  this evening.

“Weather conditions will deteriorate rapidly this evening with heavy snow and strong winds resulting in whiteout conditions,”  EMA says. “Check road conditions before driving tomorrow morning. Travel advice for the morning commute will be posted here and on the Portsmouth Police Facebook page.”
