Little Compton council snuffs BBQ fireworks this year

FireworksLITTLE COMPTON — The annual fireworks show in Little Compton that for years has lit up the sky following the August chicken barbecue will not take place this year.

The Little Compton Town Council voted unanimously Thursday night not to stage the event this year.

“”The available space to conduct it is not there,” said Council President Robert Mushen on Friday, explaining his recommendation to the council at its regular meeting the night before.

“With the modulars installed on Peckham Lot, and the parking area now on Veterans Field — the best decision is just to skip it for a year,” he said.

Construction work underway at the old school restricts the viewing area, and there were parking, access, and logistical issues as well, he said.

Mr. Mushen said he was also concerned about “the arc” that might be by taken by some of the displays in the aerial show.

The fireworks have usually been launched from the outfield area of the baseball field, he said.

“I debated for some time whether there was a way to make it happen,” Mr. Mushen said.

The crowd attending the fireworks event has typically numbered in the thousands and draw viewers from several towns — neighboring Tiverton and Westport don’t have show of their own.

Also struck from the roster of summer events during Chicken BBQ, Mr. Mushen said, is the performance of the Ocean State Summer Pops Orchestra, which has usually performed just before the fireworks show.

Whether the Chicken BBQ itself will take place this summer is not known, Mr. Mushen said. The Village Improvement Society, not the town, sponsors it, and the spokesperson for the group could not be reached by phone.
