Barrington Town Hall, Barrington, Rhode Island

The Barrington Town Council passed  a plastic bag ban by a 4-1 vote Monday night.

The matter was approved after numerous local residents spoke both for and against the proposal. Town councilor William DeWitt cast the sole nay vote.

The ban, which prohibits the use of plastic bags at checkout but allows certain bags such as plastic barrier bags, will take effect as of Jan. 1.

The ordinance will also include a sunset provision, however, which was proposed by Town Councilor Cynthia Coyne. The ordinance will automatically expire on Jan. 31, 2015, unless action is taken at that time to leave the ordinance in effect.
