The holidays are back, and so are Warren’s wooden nickels.
Once again, members of Discover Warren are breaking out local shopping tokens in hopes of getting people to spend their holiday dollars here in town. It’s the second year for the tokens, which are worth $10 each and can be used at dozens of businesses throughout town. With two major shopping days coming up in Warren, merchants are getting ready and anticipating seeing scores of them. They’re slick and smooth, about the size of a half dollar, and come in little burlap sacks.
The tokens were rolled out last year, designed by local artist Adam Tracy. They are available for purchase at the Coffee Depot, and they never expire. Though they are $10 each, shoppers can get five for $40 (a 20 percent discount) during Small Business Saturday this coming Saturday, Nov. 30.
After that, the next big shopping event is Warren Wonderland, a shopping festival that runs from 5 to 8 p.m. by local merchants. Apart from just having their doors open, participating shop owners will be doing much more, including offering holiday refreshments, music — even storytelling. Noted area story teller Mark Binder will be telling holiday stories at the Wooden Midshipman on Water Street throughout the festival.
A percentage of sales from this year’s Winter Wonderland will be donated to the Bristol Warren Education Foundation, and every $20 purchase earns shoppers a raffle ticket. For a full list of shops and restaurants that accept the coins, see www.discoverwarren.com).
“We’re just trying to get people out, shop locally and help” said the Wooden Midshipman’s Katie Dickson.
