Gerhardt out as Warren Zoning Board chair

The long-standing chairman of the Warren Zoning Board of Review has lost his post.

Warren Town Council members declined to act on Michael Gerhardt’s application for re-appointment Tuesday night, voting unanimously instead to make former alternate Andrew Ellis a full member of the board. The vote effectively removed Mr. Gerhardt from the post he’d held for a decade.

“I’m surprised and somewhat disappointed,” Mr. Gerhardt said. “I have some thoughts but when I asked the reason, I was directed to ask the solicitor.”

Town council president Chris Stanley referred questions about the issue to Warren Town Solicitor Tony DeSisto. But councilor Joseph DePasquale said Mr. Gerhardt was not re-appointed due to attitude problems.

“There was some unprofessional conduct,” Mr. DePasquale said. “There were some temper issues; unfortunately his interaction with the staff (at Warren Town Hall) was less than admirable.”

Mr. Gerhardt declined to speculate on the council’s reasoning but said he was surprised, noting that he’d received “several e-mails from (zoning board) members saying they’re sorry I’m not going to continue to serve.”

Before joining the zoning board, Mr. Gerhardt served as a member of the Warren Conservation Commission for two years.

It is unclear if Mr. Gerhardt will sit at this month’s zoning board meeting, the last of his term. A new chairman has not yet been named.
