Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Michael P. Lewis will join Senator Jack Reed and other federal, state and local leaders on Friday, Oct. 5,  to officially open the new Sakonnet River Bridge.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on the bridge deck of the old Sakonnet River Bridge.

Also announcing plans to attend is the group Tiverton STOP which has called on people to bring signs protesting toll plans for the bridge.

Originally built in 1956, the former Sakonnet River Bridge was replaced with a new steel and concrete bridge. It carries Route 24 between Tiverton and Portsmouth. An estimated 40,000 vehicles travel the route daily.

Directions and parking: From Route 24 south to Exit 5 (Main Road, Tiverton). Take a left off of the exit. Take the first right where a police officer will guide you to the closed on-ramp to the old bridge.   Please park on the bridge deck.
