A large section of Park Avenue was closed by police before high tide Monday night, as the water surged well over the top of the beach wall.
About two miles north, the southern end of Hummock Avenue was completely flooded and rendered impassable, as it was during Hurricane Irene last year.
Park Avenue was open Tuesday morning, but some motorists found if difficult to pass through the flooded area in front of Flo’s Drive In. Some turned around, while drivers of the larger vehicles plowed through.
Also Tuesday morning, a steady stream of water leaked from the roof of the Sakonnet Bridge underpass onto the sidewalk below. In Common Fence Point, the low-lying playground and baseball field were covered with water.
