Fire tears through Portsmouth family home

DSCN1480

DSCN1484Firefighters from at least four towns poured into the Common Fence Point area of Portsmouth Saturday afternoon to control a fire that tore through a two-story,  single-family home at around 3:30 p.m.

According to witnesses, the fire erupted and spread quickly inside the home at 2 Summit Road. Firefighters from Portsmouth, Tiverton, Bristol and Middletown attacked the flames from all sides, but they could not prevent massive damage to the home.

At around 4 p.m., a major section of the  second floor of the home collapsed in the back, close to where firefighters were attacking with multiple hoses. A large crowd gathered on surrounding streets in the densely packed neighborhood as smoke could be seen for miles around.

According to several people at the scene, all the home’s occupants, including two children, escaped the flames unharmed, but there was speculation that the family’s dogs might have been trapped inside.

There is no information yet on the cause of the fire, as crews are still tamping out flames at this hour.
