Goldstein’s Lawn & Farm open after fire destroys garage

Fired caused heavy damage to a garage at Goldstein’s Lawn & Farm Equipment Thursday afternoon but the business itself was not harmed and remains open as usual.

At approximately 2:50 p.m., the Westport Fire Department received a call reporting a garage fire at  287 Gifford Road.  When Fire Chief Legendre arrived one minute later, he reported a heavy smoke coming from the two-story garage measuring approximately 20 by 40 feet.

The garage suffered heavy fire damage and a vehicle inside was totally destroyed before the fire was declared under control at 3:37 p.m.

Owner Mary Ferry said that the vehicle inside was a Hummer sport recreation vehicle owned by someone else and that the fire apparently started as a result of work being done on that vehicle.

“It all went up so fast,” she said, that by the time firefighters arrived the damage had been done. She said it is a very old building but that she had just had a new roof put on it recently.

Especially upsetting, she added, is that many customers seem to think that the fire caused them to close. “Nothing has changed with the business. It was a garage out back, everything else is fine. We have been open the whole time but it seems like every time the phone rings it is somebody asking if we are open or closed.”

Assisting Westport firefighters in confining the fire to the garage were Tiverton and Little Compton fire departments while Fall River and Dartmouth crews provided station coverage.

Westport Firefighters responded with four engines, a ladder, a medical rescue and Westport Emergency Management.

There were no reported injuries and the fire is being investigated by the Westport Fire Investigation Unit and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
