Fire seriously damaged the home of Chip and Jennifer Cavallaro at 48 Mulberry St., adding to the impact of the Blizzard of 2013.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, at approximately 10:15 a.m., fire crews from Bristol and Warren were called to the scene, where they found the three-bedroom house ablaze. Firefighters carried hoses through nearly two feet of snow to battle the blaze, as well as gaining access using the ladder truck from Defiance Company.
Smoke poured from the roof of the home as firefighters used an ax and a chainsaw to ventilate the roof and attack the blaze. The southwest corner of the home was heavily damaged, in a bedroom area. It appeared the fire had also heavily damaged the attic, causing the ceiling to collapse.
No one was home at the time of the blaze. The family’s pet dog and cat were rescued unharmed.
While firefighters fought the cold and the fire, Mr. and Mrs. Cavallaro watched from the street. Friends and neighbors offered comfort and stood with the couple.
“We don’t really know what happened,” Mr. Cavallaro said, hoping he could get inside to survey the damage.
As the fire was doused, firefighters emerged with a handful of belongings that appeared to be framed photographs. The items were handed to Mr. Cavallaro.
“My son saved everything,” he said of the collection of momentos likely lost in the fire.
The couple’s son is currently studying out of the country.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
