Few bites, but fun was still had by all at annual Seekonk Lions Fishing Derby

SEEKONK — Well over 100 youngsters were on hand Monday, April 21, at the Old Grist Mill Pond for the second annual Seekonk Lions-Doug Allen Fishing Derby.

Some 125 aspiring anglers turned out for the event on Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts. It was also the beginning of April vacation for area students. The Massachusetts Division of Wildlife recently stocked the pond with an eye towards the event.

Unfortunately, the fish weren’t biting at the Old Grist Mill, according to representatives of the Lions, but they were nibbling down stream Burr’s Pond.

The youngsters competed from 9 to 11 a.m. Each child received a 10-percent of coupon from Orange Leaf FROYO shop in Seekonk and a free week of Karate instructions from Dojo One Martial Arts also in Seekonk. Bass Pro shops donated 25 poles with reels and bait for those kids who did not have fishing equipment and also supplied hats and frisbees. In addition the kids were served hot dogs and soda provided by the Lions.

All the prizes were raffled off since no fish were caught. Plus there were other raffles with donated prizes worth over $300.

Seekonk Grand Prix donated go-cart rides and miniature golf passes. Battlegroundz Laser Tag in Attleboro donated a laser tag day pass for two. Ryan’s Amusement Center in Attleboro donated a family pack at the amusement center. Monster Miniature Golf in Seekonk donated free golf passes. Orange Leaf Yogurt in Seekonk donated gave 120 of the aforementioned discount coupons and nine free yogurt certificates  Other sponsors were Young’s Caterers, Honey Dew Donuts, McDonald Restaurants.

The Seekonk Lions saluted all of the sponsors and offered up a “big thanks” to the owners of the Grist Mill for letting the organization provide a great fishing day for area kids.
